Por Los Mojados (for the wetbacks) is an original production developed by ProyectoTeatro’s youth company.
In the summer of 2014, more than 50,000 unaccompanied and undocumented minors poured into the borders of the United States in search of refuge from their impoverished and violence-ridden lives in Central America. These children were thrown into a media frenzy that labeled them as criminals and to this day, they are still rejected by a society ignorant of the motives behind their migration.
Por Los Mojados is not only the story of these children, but an in-depth exploration of the political and social events responsible for what is known as the largest immigration crisis of the western hemisphere — a ring of human smuggling that has operated silently under the radar of the international community since the turn of the 20th century.
With over five months of extensive investigation by the cast, this performance blends drama and comedy through theatre and contemporary dance to explore the stories of thousands of abandoned children forgotten by their parents, ignored by their governments, and ultimately rejected by the same international laws that were set up to protect them. Por Los Mojados is much more than just the story of the immigration crisis of 2014, it is the story of Latin America told through the ingenious perspective of children.
Por Los Mojados was written by the cast of ProyectoTeatro’s youth company, directed by Luis Armando Ordaz Gutiérrez, and premieres guest choreography from Juan Pablo Flores (NYC).
