Preparation for the Obsolescence of the Y Chromosome

Preparation for the Obsolescence of the Y Chromosome attempts to prepare (both on a micro and macro level) for the end of men. Simultaneously committed to conservation and archival efforts, Ellsworth works in the tradition of folklorist Alan Lomax. Using web technology, replacement apparatus (including a male gaze simulator), choreography (including reenactments of authentic man dances), and the latest data from the Whitehead Institute at MIT, this work investigates rumors about the implications of the Y Chromosome’s reputed shrinkage.

Women & Their Work Women & Their Work introduces Austin audiences to the joy and wonder of art through more than 50 ambitious exhibitions, performances, and education programs every year. A catalyst for new ideas, we have served as a vital hub of contemporary art for over 37 years prompting thoughtful questions about the world around us and introducing under-served AISD school children to the art of our time. We have earned recognition throughout the country for the quality of our programs and helped attract national attention to the work created here.  www.womenandtheirwork.org
