Adrian Aguilera + Betelhem Makonnen + Tammie Rubin

ADRIAN AGUILERA (b. 1981, Monterrey, Mexico) is a curator and conceptual artist whose work uses the printed media as a symbol for mechanical reproduction of the natural world and its potential of deconstruction of cultural meaning. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in Leun’un ArteHabitación (San Pedro Garza Garcia, Mexico), Centre Culturel du Mexique (Paris, France), and Mexican American Cultural Center (Austin TX). He received his BFA in painting from the University Autonomous of Nuevo Leon, Mexico in 2004. He currently lives in Austin, Texas.

BETELHEM MAKONNEN (b. 1972, Addis Abeba, Ethiopia) is an artist working with mediums that include video, photography and installations to explore questions on perception, presence and place within a trans- temporal and trans-locative topology that operates on the relational dynamics of diasporic consciousness. She seeks material equivalences that reflect a conjugated present – recognizing the future and the past as forms of the present, present in the present. She has exhibited both nationally and internationally. Makonnen has a B.A in History and Literature of the African Diaspora (1995) from the University of Texas in Austin, Coursework in Painting, Time-based media, and Modern and Contemporary Art History (2007 – 2012) from the School of Visual Arts of Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro and is currently pursuing a MFA (2019), as a New Artists Society Merit Scholar, in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago Low-Res Program. In addition to her artistic practice, she is a curator at Fusebox Festival, an annual art and contemporary performance arts festival, and co-editor of the online arts periodical Written & Spoken.

TAMMIE RUBIN (b. Chicago, USA) is a sculptor who transforms familiar objects into ceramic mythic relics. Her sculptures explore the gaps between the readymade and the handcrafted object, opening up dream-like spaces of unexpected associations and dislocations. Rubin has exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions, recent selections include Women & Their Work, Austin, TX; the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Houston, TX; de stijl | PODIUM FOR ART, Austin, TX; John C. Hutcheson Gallery, Lipscomb University, Nashville, TN; and Horton Gallery, San Joaquin Delta College, Stockton, CA. Rubin is a recipient of grants from Artist Trust Grants for Artist Projects Seattle, and an Artist Project Grant from the Illinois Arts Council. She currently lives in Austin, Texas where she is an Assistant Professor of Ceramics & Sculpture at St. Edward’s University.
