AUSTIN REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE + JASON MELLARD

Austin Revolutions per Minute is a collaboration of authors, artists, music professionals, and students of Austin’s music history. The group’s organizer, Jason Mellard, is the Assistant Director of the Center for Texas Music History at Texas State University in San Marcos, where he also teaches in the Department of History. He co-edits The Journal of Texas Music History and is the author of Progressive Country: How the 1970s Transformed the Texan in Popular Culture (University of Texas Press, 2013).

Mellard’s collaborators of this project include John Cline, a writing instructor at the University of Texas whose work has appeared in The Atlantic, Salon, The Oxford American,and The Los Angeles Review of Books; Stu Gilbert, director of the documentary Spent a Year There One Knite about the pioneering 1970s blues club that stood at the current site of Stubb’s; entertainment and intellectual property lawyer Mirna Maddox, manager of The Reverberation Appreciation Society record label and long-time host of KOOP psych program Sun in Scorpio; music writer Elizabeth Lopez, Board Member of the Austin Latino Music Association and the Texas Music Museum; Alan Schaefer, co-editor of The Journal of Texas Music History, editor of Homegrown: Austin Music Posters 1967 to 1982 (University of Texas Press, 2015), and Lecturer in the Department of English at Texas State University;musician Kim Simpson co-host of the KOOP program Around the Town Sounds and author of Early ‘70s Radio: The American Format Revolution (Continuum, 2011); Ricky Stein, singer-songwriter and the author of Sonobeat Records: Pioneering the Austin Sound in the ‘60s (The History Press, 2014); artist and comedian Kerry Awn, a veteran Austin scenester long associated with such institutions as the Soap Creek Saloon, Esther’s Follies, and the band the Uranium Savages; and Texas State graduate students in public history Jennifer Ruch and Jon Watson, among others.
