JISUN KIM

Jisun Kim is a Korean artist with a background and degree in Time Art. Her body of work explores her interests in social systems, cultures, and “no man’s land” (multi-layered spaces created between laws, norms, borders of physical lands, marginalized spaces in existing and online worlds). When the most solid-looking, well-established systems (e.g. national border, capitalism, or media) meet, it can produce a peculiar niche or hole. These spaces are not legitimate, yet not illegal, either. Her work attempts to reveal these holes within the system and live inside them.

In 2011, Kim founded a guerrilla media group Pan-Asia International Conference. In her 2012 work Well-Stealing, she developed a coup-plotting device, which she used to turn herself and the audience invisible. Once invisible, they proceeded to occupy an emblematic plaza of Seoul. Climax of The Next Scene appeared at the KunstenFestivalDesArts in Brussels and will be presented at the Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati this April.

김지선은 시간예술을 전공했으며, 사회 시스템과 문화, no man’s land (법, 규범, 국경에 의해 생겨난 물리적 영토 내에서의 다층적 공간, 실재적 장소이나 시스템에 의해 배제된 공간, 온라인 등) 에 대한 관심을 바탕으로 작업을 선보이고 있다.

“국가나 자본주의 같이 가장 견고해 보이는 시스템이 부딪히는 지점엔 빈 공간이 생겨나고 비합법적이지만 불법은 아닌 지점이 발생한다. 나의 활동은 그런 시스템의 빈틈을 찾아내고 그 안에 들어가 기생하는 것이다.”
